Description
Stowe Maries is a partly 16th century timber-framed building with 20th century additions to the south and east. The original north-south wing in the southwest part was formerly two cottages and is now occupied by one owner. In this section, the timber-framing is exposed, and the southwestern wall of the vestibule may have originally been an external wall of the cottage. Inside, the timber-framed structure is visible again in the upstairs rooms, and there are massive beams downstairs. The western front of the oldest part features modern timber framing with plaster infilling above and modern brick facing below, along with modern casement windows and a tiled roof. On the eastern side of the wing, where the main entrance is located, there is an east-west cross wing that abuts it in the center, with a modern porch forming an extrusion between the two wings. There is also a modern extension featuring post and pan timbering further east, built at the direction of Leslie Howard, who lived in this house.
