Description
The Hamelot Monument is a tomb chest located approximately 18 meters southeast of the chancel of the Church of St Giles in Ashtead. It dates from the early to mid 18th century and commemorates various members of the Hamelot family, particularly Peter Hamelot, who died in 1742. The monument is made of limestone ashlar and is designed in a classical style. It features plain side and end panels, with bold gadrooned and fluted decorations flanking the side panels. The lid has a moulded edge and is inscribed with epitaphs for Jane, the wife of Hierome Hamelot, a doctor of physic, who died in 1731; Catherine, the wife of Peter Hamelot, rector of Ashtead, who died in 1728; and an inscription identifying Peter Hamelot as a Huguenot refugee. The inscription states that he left France due to persecution and became the pastor of the church on March 25, 1699, dying on April 14, 1742, at the age of 81.
