BETCHWORTH MIDDLE STREET (East side, off) Shop approximately 100 metres South-East of Brockenham Park

Originally farmhouse, later house and bailiff's office, later workshop and shop. c1600, extended by one bay to the left in the early C19, embellished and extended to the rear in late C19 and with some C20 alterations. Timber-framed building of 3 bays with brick infill, some C20, with pebble dashed right side elevation, brick end bay to left with tile hanging to first floor of left side elevation, brick extensions and tiled roof with one off central and one left end brick chimneystack. PLAN: originally a lobby-entrance house. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 3 windows. Front has casement windows, large late C19 canted bay to ground floor and verandah with tiled roof on painted wooden supports incorporating a gabled porch to the right hand side. Right side elevation also has a large late C19 canted bay and false window above because the ceiling was heightened in the end room. INTERIOR: ground floor has chamfered beam and chimneystack has been boxed in. First floor has exposed frame including curved tension braces, queen-post roof and plank cupboard on pintle hinges to left of chimneystack. Cracks in the plaster indicate there could be an open fireplace on the first floor.
