Description

This building, located approximately 100 metres southeast of Brockham Park, was originally a farmhouse around 1600, later serving as a house and bailiff's office, and eventually becoming a workshop and shop. It was extended by one bay to the left in the early 19th century, with further embellishments and extensions to the rear in the late 19th century, along with some 20th-century alterations. The structure is timber-framed, comprising three bays with brick infill, some of which is from the 20th century. The right side elevation is pebble dashed, while the left end bay is brick with tile hanging on the first floor. The building has brick extensions and a tiled roof featuring one central and one left end brick chimneystack. Originally designed as a lobby-entrance house, it stands two storeys high with three windows. The front has casement windows, a large late 19th-century canted bay on the ground floor, and a verandah with a tiled roof supported by painted wooden columns, which includes a gabled porch on the right side. The right side elevation also features a large late 19th-century canted bay and a false window above, as the ceiling in the end room was heightened. Inside, the ground floor has a chamfered beam, and the chimneystack is boxed in. The first floor reveals an exposed frame with curved tension braces, a queen-post roof, and a plank cupboard on pintle hinges to the left of the chimneystack. Cracks in the plaster suggest there may have been an open fireplace on the first floor.
