Description
Vale Lodge is a large house, dating to approximately 1780 and subsequently enlarged, situated on the site of a former Rectory. It is now divided into four dwellings. The house is constructed primarily of brick, largely concealed by stucco and roughcast, all painted white, with slate roofs. Its roughly L-shaped plan is formed by ranges of varying builds joined at the northwest corner, with later additions. The two-and-a-half-storey north front has a 6-bay main range, with a vertical joint in the centre, a canted bay attached to its right-hand end, and the returned end of the west range. The left half of the main range is slightly set back and features a modern porch next to the central joint and a 16-pane sash window to its left. The right half has a large tripartite sash window left of centre, a small round-headed window to the left, and a 12-pane sash window to the right. The main range is topped with a 2-span mansard roof featuring four dormers, a central ridge chimney, and gable chimneys on the right. The canted bay to the right has 12-pane sashes on both floors, though the ground floor sash on the right is now obscured by a large modern porch; it has a shallow hipped roof hidden behind the parapet. The end of the west range has a large rectangular former porch, originally with Tuscan columns distyle in antis, a plain frieze, cornice, and blocking course; a similar window is located at first floor. The west front is symmetrical, with seven bays and two-storey canted bay windows in the second and sixth bays. It generally features 12-pane sashed windows, with French windows on the ground floor of the canted bays (some altered), and a parapet concealing the roof, which features three chimneys. The rear of the property has undergone various alterations. The interior remains uninspected.
