Description

Nos 1-5 Weston Yard and Knowles Cottage are a row of cottages dating from the late 17th century, with 18th and 19th century extensions on the left that match the original style, and 20th century extensions set back at the left end. The buildings are constructed of galleted ironstone rubble with brick dressings on the right, red brick in the center, and a mix of red and blue brick to the left of center, with red brick on the left end. They have a plain tiled roof and are two storeys high, standing on a plinth with a brick plat band over the ground floor and a wooden eaves band on the cottages to the right and center.

The cottages feature a rear ridge stack to the right, a front stack to the right of center, and three ridge stacks to the left of center and the left end. There are 14 casement windows across the first floor, with those in the right-hand cottages having brick dressings. Four windows to the left of center have gauged brick heads. The ground floor has eight casement windows and one small casement window, most of which are under gauged brick heads. There is a blind panel to the right, and Knowles Cottage has a door to the right under a cambered gauged brick head. No. 1 has a half-glazed door in a gabled open porch with quatrefoil decoration in the cusped bargeboards. No. 2 features a part-glazed door under a cambered head, while Nos. 3 and 5 have identical part-glazed doors under gabled hoods with bargeboards on braces, located to the left of center and at the left end. There are some timber posts and a possible blocked stable entrance in the center.

At the rear, there are gabled brick wings to the right and a lower ironstone and sandstone wing with fishscale tile hanging on the roof in the center. The right-hand return front, facing the street, has double gabled bays with two windows on the first floor to the left under gauged brick heads with label mouldings, and two diagonal stacks on the ridge.
