Description

The Guildford War Memorial is located in the gardens of Guildford Castle, specifically on the northern side of the Bowling Green. It is situated near the Grade I listed Castle Keep and the remains of the Shell Keep, forming the southern boundary of a small Garden of Remembrance. Although it is within the castle grounds, it is outside the scheduled area and close to several listed buildings, including the Grade II listed Gas Lamp in the Garden of Remembrance. Access to the memorial is via a set of three steps leading up from the south.

This limestone memorial features a broad Classical archway, supported by square piers at each end, which have pilasters inside. Inside the archway, there are two Tuscan columns that flank a later addition, the Second World War memorial. The entablature above is topped with two stone urns at either end. The frieze on the south side is inscribed with the words "TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD," while the north side bears the inscription "THEIR NAME LIVETH." The dates of the First and Second World Wars are displayed on projecting panels above the piers, with "MCMXIV/ MCMXVIII" on the west side and "MCMXXXIX/ MCMXLV" on the east side.

Each pier's south face features a relief carving of a reversed sword, with the hilt and cross-guard encircled by a laurel wreath. The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on Portland stone panels on the other faces of the piers. The Second World War memorial, located within the archway, is a square pedestal. The south face of the cap reads: "1939 – 1945/ IN REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE GUILDFORDIANS/ WHO DIED IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR," while the other faces are inscribed with "1939 · 1945." The names of the commemorated individuals are listed on each face of the die.
