Description
The remains of the shell keep at Guildford Castle date back to the early 12th century. This polygonal structure features a wall made of flint and chalk rubblestone located to the southwest of the tower keep. The wall is approximately 6 meters high at its highest point, with lower, truncated sections extending towards the ends. This wall is part of a shell keep that originally surrounded the earliest earth mound of the castle and is recognized as a scheduled Ancient Monument, designated as Surrey Monument No. 1.
