Description

Bakers Gate is a house dating from the 17th century, with 20th-century extensions to the left end. It is constructed of brown brick, with stone to the ground floor centre right, set on a rendered plinth. The roof is tiled. The house is two storeys with attics in gabled bays, and features leaded casement windows in the attic. A plat band runs above the ground floor and also above the first floor of the gabled bays. Large, triple-diagonal stacks are situated to the left of the centre, a double stack to the right end with a crow-stepped plinth and diagonal brick dentil top, and a large, square, multiple stack to the centre rear of the house. The original front of the house is symmetrical, with the end gable bays containing one three-light casement window on each floor. There is evidence of previous, blocked windows under brick keystone heads. A four-light casement window is centrally positioned, with a smaller window to the right. A half-glazed door is located centrally, between the flanking windows. A one-bay extension is present to the left end, built in a matching style. The right-hand return front features a new main entrance with a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, positioned under a cambered head and a projecting hood supported by brackets. The interior reveals exposed ceiling beams and deep brick fireplaces.
