Description

COMPTON

431/0/10032 EASTBURY LANE 01-APR-03 (Off) Cartshed north east of Westbury Manor

GV II

Probably originally cart shed, later used as an animal shelter. Early C18, restored in late C20 by SPAB scholars. EXTERIOR: Timberframed, clad in elm weatherboarding on brick plinth with half-hipped tiled roof. A most unusual feature is the six large tapering cylindrical Bargate stone supports to the two longer walls to south west and north east. To the north west is a wide opening on the right hand side and there are small openings to the gables on the north west and south east sides. INTERIOR: The wall frame has diagonal tension braces. The roof structure has tie beams, collar beams, purlins and rafters with ridgepiece. The central queenposts and diagonal tension braces to roof are nailed on and were not part of the original roof structure. The top of the wall plate in the south eastern corner has four C19 or earlier iron hooks for hanging either coats or tack. There is a fine Bargate stone floor sloping to the south east.
