Description
The building known as the cartshed, located north east of Westbury Manor, is likely an early 18th century structure that was originally used as a cart shed and later repurposed as an animal shelter. It underwent restoration in the late 20th century by scholars from the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.
The exterior features a timber frame clad in elm weatherboarding, resting on a brick plinth, topped with a half-hipped tiled roof. A distinctive characteristic of the building is the six large tapering cylindrical Bargate stone supports along the two longer walls on the south west and north east sides. On the north west side, there is a wide opening on the right, along with small openings in the gables on both the north west and south east sides.
Inside, the wall frame includes diagonal tension braces. The roof structure consists of tie beams, collar beams, purlins, and rafters, with a ridgepiece. The central queenposts and diagonal tension braces in the roof were added later and were not part of the original structure. In the south eastern corner, the top of the wall plate features four iron hooks from the 19th century or earlier, which were used for hanging coats or tack. The interior also boasts a fine Bargate stone floor that slopes towards the south east.
