Description

The Compton War Memorial is located prominently on The Street in Compton, enclosed within a stone-walled semi-circular area that features a red brick coping. It is made of grey Yorkstone and consists of a squared shaft that tapers towards the top, where it is topped by a terracotta lantern designed in the Arts and Crafts style. The shaft includes carved details in the same style and flares out at the base. On the two sides facing the road, the south and east sides, the names of 15 men who lost their lives in the war are inscribed, while the other two sides are plain.

The inscription on the plinth's south face reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF COMPTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The east face bears the inscription: "THROUGH THE AGES ONE CLEAR FLAME OF SACRIFICE HAS BURNED AND BY ITS LIGHT MEN SEE GOD," which likely relates to the design of the lantern. The plinth is set on a one-stepped base of grey Yorkstone, which in turn rests on a circular paved base.

Additionally, a rectangular stone plaque was later affixed to the south face of the enclosure wall, inscribed with: "THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR EVERMORE 1914-1918." Below this are the names of the 15 men who died in the First World War, along with the years "1939-1945," which lists the names of five men who lost their lives in the Second World War.
