Description
Squirrels Cottages is a pair of cottages located on Hurtmore Lane in Shackleford. The cottage on the right dates from the 18th century, while the one on the left is from the 19th century. The right-hand cottage is timber framed and sits on a sandstone plinth, with exposed brown brick infill. The left-hand cottage features galleted sandstone with red brick dressings and has a sandstone and brick extension at its right end. Both cottages have plain tiled roofs that slope down over the left-hand cottage.
They are positioned at right angles to the street and are two storeys high. The left cottage has an end stack, the central junction of the two cottages has a stack, and the right end has a ridge stack. The right-hand cottage has two framed bays with exposed bracing on the first floor and two casement windows on each floor, along with a central 19th-century door. The left-hand cottage has three casement windows on the first floor and two below, with a central door. There is also a single-storey sandstone extension at the left end, which includes one casement window and an additional door.
