Description
The Shackleford and Peper Harow War Memorial is located prominently at a crossroads in Shackleford, near the Church of St Mary. It features a limestone cross atop an octagonal shaft, which is set on an octagonal plinth resting on a two-stepped base. The plinth is inscribed in Celtic-style lettering with the words: IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF/ THE/ MEN OF SHACKLEFORD/ AND/ PEPER HAROW/ WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918. Four granite tablets are embedded in the longer sides of the plinth, each bearing the names of 23 men who died in the war, with the lettering painted.
The first step of the base includes an integral stone trough, which has the inscription on the south face: THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR EVERMORE. The other faces of the step are plain, though it seems the lettering has been removed from the east face.
The memorial is enclosed by an octagonal paved area, bordered by low walls on five sides made of Bargate stone with York stone coping, and is open on the south side, accessible by two steps.
At each end of the wall, granite tablets are affixed, inscribed with 1939-1945 and listing the names of five men who lost their lives in the Second World War.
