Description

Rosemary Cottage is a house that dates from the early 16th century for the southern part and has an 18th-century parallel range facing the street. Both sections have been altered and restored in the 19th and 20th centuries. The southern wing is timber framed, with one end exposed and red brick infill. The ground floor of the street elevation features galleted sandstone rubble with brick quoins, while the upper floor is made of red and blue brick, with a tile-hung gable on the right side of the entrance front. The roofs are plain tiled, hipped over the rear wing and to the left.

The entrance front is two storeys high, with the gabled end of the older wing projecting to the right. There is a ridge stack on the rear left. The first floor has a three-light casement window, while the ground floor has a blocked window below it and another three-light casement window on the left side, along with a single casement window on the ground floor left. An oak door is located at the re-entrant angle of the wing, sheltered by a penticed hood.

The street elevation slopes down to a basement, which is buttressed at the left corner. There is one leaded casement window in the basement and one casement window on each floor above, featuring gauged brick heads and stone keystones. A plat band runs over the ground floor. The rear wing has two framed bays, jettied at the east end with a dragon beam, which is now clad in brick. Inside, there is a crown-post roof, and evidence suggests that this section was once part of a larger house that extended to the north.
