Description
The Maori Meeting House, located 150 metres east of Clandon Park, is a late 19th-century structure that was purchased by Lord Onslow around 1892 and carved by Wero. It features a timber frame with a gabled roof that is thatched with bamboo and reeds. The walls are clad in similar materials and are brightly painted. The entrance is at the gable end, with a recessed wall. It has thick bargeboards adorned with feather and scroll patterns, and a central male figure at the apex of the gable. To the left of the entrance, there is one sash window with margin-light glazing, and to the right, a panelled door. Inside, the wall posts and ceiling rafters are painted and carved. The original Maori name for the meeting house is Hinemihi.
