Description

The Grotto and Bath House, located south of Clandon Park, was designed around 1776 by Capability Brown. It is constructed from flint rubble with brick interior dressings and decorative patterning. The structure features a central range with a pediment, flanked by lower, curved retaining walls on either side of an elliptical arch, which is adorned with "rustic" voussoirs at the front. Inside, there is a vaulted roof with six arched niches along the walls, which are finished with tile and flint voussoirs and have splayed sides. A bath is located at the center rear of the grotto.
