Description

The Treadwheel Crane is a late 17th century to 18th century structure that was repaired in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was dismantled and re-erected at its current location around 1970. The crane is timber framed with oak weatherboard cladding and has a plain-tiled roof. It features two framed bays, one of which is open with arched braces. The clad bay has a queen-strut clasped-purlin roof. To the east, there is a braced crane hoist connected to a main treadwheel that is approximately 5 metres in diameter and 1½ metres wide. The crane was operated by two men in the treadwheel and was last used to transport stone for Guildford Cathedral around 1960. It is believed to be the last working example of its kind in Great Britain. The Treadwheel Crane is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, with Surrey Monument Number 145.
