Description

Ebenezer Baptist Chapel, built in 1812 for William Meryett, is a stuccoed brick building with a Welsh slate roof. It is a single-storey, two-bay chapel with lean-to vestries on either side, each with a panelled door within a wooden frame. The front of the chapel has two sash windows with glazing bars, flanked by a raised plaque inscribed "AD 1812/Ebenezer Strict Baptist Chapel". The eaves are stepped. The rear elevation has two windows similar to the front, with a truncated and capped lateral stack. Inside, a white marble memorial tablet commemorates the founder, William Meryett, who died in 1845. The chapel also contains fielded-panelled pulpits and later 19th-century pews brought around 1950 from the Strict Baptist Chapel in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Part of an original 1812 pulpit is located at the back of the current pulpit, featuring quatrefoils above pointed arched panels.
