Description
The East Clandon War Memorial is located prominently in the churchyard at the corner of The Street in East Clandon. It is set on a rectangular paved area that can be accessed from the east by seven steps, which are flanked by two low stone walls.
The memorial features a sandstone cross atop an octagonal shaft, which stands on a square plinth. At the top of the cross is a figure of Christ crucified, with four angels positioned around the shaft below.
Three faces of the plinth are inscribed with the names of 14 men who lost their lives in the war, although the names are now almost illegible. The original inscription likely read: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY/ OF MEN OF EAST CLANDON/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE WAR 1914-1918." However, this inscription has been obscured by an added stone panel after the Second World War, which now states: "1914-1918 and 1939-1945/ IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF EAST CLANDON/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN TWO WORLD WARS."
The plinth is set on a two-stepped base, and the east faces of the steps are inscribed with the names of six men who lost their lives in the Second World War. The top step also bears the inscription "1939-1945."
