Description

Vaughan House is a house that now serves as a Church Army Hostel. It dates from the 18th century and is built on older foundations, with later 18th century and late 19th century extensions added to the front and right sides. The building is made of red brick with gauged-brick dressings and has plain tiled roofs that are obscured by stone-coped parapets.

The original house, located on the left, consists of three bays, while the extension projects across the ground floor and includes a five-bay extension to the right. The structure has three storeys, featuring plat bands above the ground and first floors, and a brick modillion cornice above. There are stacks located at the rear of the building.

On the first and second floors of the original range, there are three 12-pane glazing-bar sash windows, each set under gauged-brick heads. The ground floor projects beneath a brick-dentilled cornice and has square bay breaks at the ends, each containing two sashes with upper lights that have glazing bars, all under gauged-brick and keystone heads decorated with sunken panels. The cornice drops down over a recessed central entrance that features a half-glazed door under an overlight, flanked by thin Doric piers.

The five-bay range to the right has similar window arrangements, with the upper lights featuring only glazing bars. There is also a door to the left within a porch recess. The building is included for its group value.
