Description
The Lodge and Gates form an entrance to West Horsley Place, built in the mid-19th century for H Currie, with later extensions to the rear in the 20th century. The lodge is constructed of red and brown brick, incorporating some brick from the 17th century, and has plain tiled roofs. It is a single-storey building with rusticated angle quoins and brick dentils to the gable eaves. The lodge follows a T-plan, with a corbelled stack at the crossing of the wings. A "cross" leaded casement window is positioned under a label to the left-hand gable; a plain casement, also with a hood, is set within a chamfered surround to the gable facing the road. A hip-roofed, 20th-century brick porch is located in the re-entrant angle to the left, featuring a ribbed 20th-century door. A lower brick wing extends to the right. Gates and railings are attached to the lodge to the left, with curved quadrant railings at the ends supporting square sandstone block piers surmounted by spherical finials, standing approximately 8 feet high. These railings flank the main gates, which feature scroll foliage and arched work in the central overthrow. According to recollections from Emily Currie in 1901, “The approach to the house was from the Guildford and Epsom Road, through a lodge built by my father.” A map from around 1735, held within the house, indicates that a lodge was not present in this location at that time and the gate piers were of a different style.
