Description
The former conservatory, located approximately 10 metres west of Merrow Grange, was built around 1907 by James Pulham and Son. It is constructed from Pulhamite stone, which is clinker covered with Portland cement, along with sandstone blocks. The structure features a cast iron and glazed roof, although only the remains of the roof are visible above ground. The conservatory includes an oval grotto chamber that connects to another chamber, with entrances at either end accessed by spiral stairs. The floors are finished with terrazzo and tiles. The skeleton of a glazed oval roof once covered the main chamber, but the glass is now missing. At the time of the last survey, the conservatory was noted to be in some disrepair and is likely unique among Pulhamite constructions. It is one of several garden features in the grounds of Merrow Grange, which are included in the Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England as Grade II. The conservatory is now situated within the grounds of Fairlawns, Lauston Close, which is 10 metres north of Fairlawns.
