Description
This gas lamp, located in the Garden of Remembrance approximately 8 meters southwest of the Castle Square entrance, was installed in 1828 by the Guildford Gas Light and Coke Company. It is made of stone and features a Doric column that stands about 3 meters high, resting on a square pedestal and plinth with a moulded edge. The column is fluted and has a square abacus insert halfway up, with incised fillet bands beneath the echinus below the abacus cap. A hole has been drilled through the lower abacus and plinth to accommodate a pipe. This lamp is an early and unusual example of its kind, having been relocated from its original site at the junction of London and Epsom Roads.
