Description

Chilbrook Farmhouse is a house that was originally a farmhouse, dating from the early to mid 17th century. It underwent extensive rebuilding in the early 18th century and now predominantly reflects that later period, with some changes made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with black brick headers and features an old tiled roof with end brick chimneystacks. It has two storeys and attics, with three windows. The house includes two gabled dormers with 19th-century casements on pintle hinges, along with a late 19th-century brick and wooden weather porch that has a half-hipped tiled roof. There is a plat band and plinth, and the right side has a lean-to addition from the early 19th century. A 20th-century single-storey extension is located on the left.

Inside, the ground floor right side room has an exposed chamfered axial beam with lambs tongue stops and floor joists. The early 18th-century staircase has been altered from a well to a straight flight, although the attic storey remains in its original form. The first floor features a three-plank door, some two-panelled doors, and an early 19th-century fire grate. There are some early 17th-century floorboards on the first and attic storeys, although the attic roof is from the 18th century and has through purlins. Some 17th-century panelling can be found in the attic. Additionally, there is a so-called "priest's hole" next to the first floor brick chimney stack, which is accessed from the floorboards at attic level and is likely an 18th-century home improvement based on its brickwork.
