Description
St Matthew's Church of England First School is a school building constructed in 1901 as a girls' school by the architectural firm of Treadwell and Martin for local benefactor Mary Sophia Dawson. The building is designed in the Art Nouveau style and is made of red brick in English bond, with a battered base. It features timber-framed gables with plaster infill and a tiled roof that includes one brick chimney-stack and a central tapering bellcote topped with a shingled spire and a cock weathervane.
The front elevation has paired gables on brackets, with two cambered casements below that have leaded lights and stained glass windows. There is a central recessed doorcase with double doors featuring tulip-patterned brass fittings and a fanlight with a rose motif in stained glass. The building has a deep plinth and decorative rainwater heads with a castellated design. The side gables have round-headed twenty-pane windows with Art Nouveau stained glass designs. The rear elevation includes a large dormer with a casement window that also has leaded lights.
Inside, the school features an ornamental metal plaque, dado panelling, and an original fireplace in the headmistress's office that has three embossed hearts. The hall boasts a queen post roof with four original circular iron light fittings that incorporate texts.
