Description
Postboys Row comprises a row of accommodation and shops, originally built to house postboys employed at nearby inns. Constructed around 1790 by James Ingram, the building is characterised by painted brickwork on a rendered plinth, topped by a hipped roof covered in old tiles and featuring four chimneystacks: one brick and three cement rendered. The structure consists of two parallel ranges, presenting a regular facade of eight windows across two storeys. A brick cornice, embellished with modillions, runs along the eaves.
The first floor windows are primarily original 12-pane sashes with moulded architraves, though replacements have been introduced at number 3 and number 2. Number 5 has a 20th-century casement window. Ground floor windows are mostly sashes, including two 12-pane sashes and two 19th-century sashes, one with vertical glazing bars and one without. Five doorcases are set back under flat hoods; numbers 1, 5, and 6 feature four-panelled doors, with glazed upper panels on numbers 1 and 5. Number 1 incorporates a 19th-century shopfront with pilasters, a cornice, and six large panes. Number 5 boasts a mid-19th-century six-pane window with horns, pilasters, and a cornice, while number 7 exhibits a 19th-century shopfront featuring both a cornice and pilasters. Footscrapers are positioned between numbers 4 and 5, and between numbers 6 and 7. A 20th-century bay window extends from the side elevation of number 1, and a doorcase is present on the side elevation of number 8. Modern extensions are located at the rear of the building.
