Description

The Chaplaincy is a building located in Whiteley Village, constructed around 1912 by architect Walter Cave. It features a roughcast exterior on a rendered plinth with stone dressings and has hipped roofs covered with plain tiles. The building is two storeys high and includes a string course above the ground floor. The central section has two bays with a gable front, and there are cross wings at each end. The windows are plate glass leaded casements, with two four-light windows on the first floor center and a mullion and transom window on each gable. To the left of the center, there is an arched planked and studded door set in a stop-chamfered surround, along with another door on the left-hand return front. A lead statue is supported by a corbel at the center of the first floor. To the right, there is a flat-roofed single-storey garage extension. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed in an octagonal layout by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
