Description

Nos. 3 to 17 Chestnut Walk are almshouse flats built around 1912 by Walter Cave. The building features red brick with stone dressings and hipped plain tiled roofs. It has end stacks on either side of the center and ridge stacks on the wings. The structure is symmetrical, consisting of a two-storey, three-bay central block with one-storey wings on either side that project forward, creating a courtyard in front.

The central block has quoined ends and a plat band above the ground floor. The outer bays have stone-dressed mullion and transomed angle bay casement windows that rise through two floors and into the roof line. The center is divided into three bays by quoined piers, with an arched arcade across the ground floor and an upper balcony above with glazed outer openings. A staircase is located behind the central arch, with recessed planked doors in arched openings at the ends and additional doors in the quoined wings on the sides. A central lantern on a bracket is positioned over the ground floor arch.

This building is part of Whiteley Village, which was laid out in an octagonal plan and commissioned by William Whiteley of Whiteley Stores to provide housing for thrifty elderly people.
