Description
Nos. 12 to 20 on Octagon Road is a row of almshouses built around 1912, possibly designed by Ernest George. The building is constructed of red brick, featuring raised quoins and a moulded cornice beneath a plain hipped tiled roof. It has two tall ridge stacks and is a single storey with ten bays. The first, fourth, fifth, eighth, and ninth bays contain casement windows, while arched entrances are located in the second, third, sixth, seventh, and tenth bays. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide housing for thrifty elderly people and was laid out in an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
