Description
The bridge and adjoining gatepiers, located approximately 35 metres northeast of North Lodge in Cornbury and Wychwood civil parish, date back to 1689 and are likely designed by William Talman. Constructed from ironstone ashlar, the bridge features five round arches, with a larger central arch that has a raised keystone and flanking pilasters. The smaller arches on either side have flush keystones. Above, there is a parapet with a string course and coping.
Adjoining the bridge to the southwest are a pair of square limestone ashlar gatepiers, probably from the mid-19th century, which form the entrance to the courtyard in front of North Lodge. Each gatepier has a chamfered plinth, a moulded cornice, and a globe finial. This bridge is likely part of the improvements made at Cornbury for the Earl of Clarendon by Talman in 1689, and it carries the northeast drive from Charlbury to Cornbury House across the River Evenlode.
