Description

No. 38 Oxford Street is a house dating from the late 17th century, with a rear extension added in the late 18th century and a refronting around 1840. The building is constructed of coursed limestone, featuring mid-19th century brickwork at the parapet, and has a rendered front with raised quoin strips. It has a gabled stone slate roof and a brick stack on the left end. The house has a two-unit plan with a through-passage that extends to an L-plan. It stands two storeys tall and has a symmetrical two-window range. Wrought-iron brackets support a flat hood over a six-panelled door, which has two glazed panels. The first floor features mid-19th century canted bay windows with plate-glass sashes, and the parapet includes blind revealed panels. At the rear, there is a stair-turret with a hipped roof and a small 20th-century extension, along with a late 18th or early 19th century rear right wing that has a concrete tile roof. Inside, the passage displays late 17th century plank and stud partitions with muntins tenoned into a central rail. There are stop-chamfered beams to the right and on the first floor, and an early 19th century open-well staircase with stick balusters and ramped handrails. The building was formerly known as the Adam and Eve Public House.
