Description

Oriel House is a house dating from approximately the 1850s and 1860s. It is constructed of limestone ashlar to the front, with a gabled concrete tile roof and stone ridge stacks. The house is of a central-staircase plan and built in the Gothic Revival style, with two storeys and an attic. It has a three-window front. The two gabled bays to the right have tympanum arches above all openings, chamfered attic lights, and four-light pointed-arched stone-mullioned and transomed windows on the first floor. A six-panelled door with an overlight is set in a pointed arched architrave, flanked by similar mullioned and transomed windows, and a canted bay window featuring matching windows and a pierced balustrade. To the left is a semi-circular oriel window featuring an angel carved into a corbel, and a segmental-arched carriage entry with a 20th-century door and window. To the right, No. 8 has a front of squared and coursed limestone, also a three-window range, with a gabled bay to the left, a tympanum arch over a 20th-century plank door set in a chamfered architrave, and similar mullioned and transomed windows. The interior has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest.
