Description
This group of three chest tombs dates from the early 19th century and is located approximately 24 meters south of the chancel of the Church of St. Leonard in Eynsham. The central tomb is a tapered sarcophagus-type made of limestone and commemorates Joseph Bowerman, who died in 1813, along with his family. The chest tomb to the north features a moulded plinth and cornice, with scribed fluting at the splayed corners. Its main panel includes a tapered inscription panel with carved spandrels. The chest tomb to the south also has a moulded plinth, cornice, and capping, with fluted pilasters that flank scribed inscription panels and nowy-headed end panels.
