Description

Rectory Cottage is a house that originated in the 17th century, with deeds believed to date back to around 1612. It was altered and refronted around 1800, with additional extensions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed rubble limestone and features a stone slate roof with flanking ashlar chimneys. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and consists of three bays. The windows are three-pane sashes with slightly chamfered wooden lintels; the right windows are positioned close together, while the left ones are spaced further apart. There are three gabled roof dormers that contain 20th-century two-light wooden casements. The central entrance features a six-panelled top-lit door, which is sheltered by a flat stone hood supported by shaped scroll brackets. There is a later lean-to addition on the right gable end, which includes a 20th-century two-light casement. At the rear of the left bay, there is an 18th-century catslide extension with an angled corner facing the farmyard, and a gabled extension is located at the rear of the right bay. A partly blocked window from the 17th to 18th century can be found on the first floor at the rear of the central bay. Inside, the right bay includes a deeply chamfered spine beam and fireplace lintel. The roof, dating from around 1800, features double purlins and incorporates some reused older timbers.
