Description

The former village school for girls and church hall is a mid-19th century building that has undergone minor later alterations. It is constructed from roughly and regularly coursed limestone rubble, featuring alternating angle quoins that extend to the gable ends. The slate roof has stepped coped verges supported by carved stone kneelers and is designed in the Tudor Gothic style.

The building consists of a central range with a flush gabled range on the left that projects to the rear, and a slightly projecting gabled range on the right. The left and central ranges are one storey with an attic, while the right range is one storey. The left gable features two 2-light mullion windows on the ground floor and one above with a dripstone, along with a louvred rectangular slit opening at the apex. The centre range has nail-studded boarded double doors set in a Tudor-arched surround with hollow spandrels, and a gabled half-dormer with a 2-light mullion window above. The right gable has a 3-light mullioned and transomed window with a dripstone, a blank armorial shield above it, and a louvred rectangular slit opening at the apex.

There are axial ridge stacks with moulded capping on both the left of the centre range and the right. Additionally, there is a low gabled range with an integral end stack attached to the rear of the left range. Historical records from mid-19th century trade directories mention two schools in Churchill, but it is unclear if either was located in this building. The building is included for its group value.
