Description
Haughton House is a house believed to have been built around 1830 for James Haughton Langston, with some minor additions and alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed from roughly coursed limestone rubble and features quoins, with hipped plain tile roofs that have boldly projecting eaves on the main range. The house has an irregular plan and is accessed from the northwest through a porch. It stands two storeys high on a chamfered plinth.
The garden front has a symmetrical design with three bays, where the central section features a hip-roofed break with tripartite glazing bar sash windows on both floors. There are additional glazing bar sash windows on the first floor to the left and right, positioned above contemporary glazed French casements. A ridge stack is located to the left of the centre, and there is an integral lateral stack to the right.
To the left of the main house, there is a single-storey attached outbuilding that was given a second storey in the late 20th century to serve as an extension to the house. The flat-roofed porch on the northwest side has a chamfered round-headed arch over a flush four-panel door, which is topped by a semi-circular fanlight. It is said that the house was built for James Haughton Langston to be used by the curate of Churchill, according to local information.
