Description
Shepherds Cottage is a late 17th-century cottage with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of roughly coursed limestone rubble with a plain tile roof. The cottage originally comprised two rooms. It has two storeys and a gable-lit attic. The front elevation features two 2-light chamfered mullion windows located directly below the eaves, and one window to the lower left. A 20th-century casement window with a concrete lintel replaces an infilled doorway in the centre, while a similar casement with a wooden lintel is located to the right. Integral ashlar end stacks are present on both the left and right sides; the left stack has a moulded dripstone and capping, while the right stack was rebuilt in the late 20th century. A 19th-century lean-to extension adjoins the left gable end.
Inside, the left ground-floor room contains an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered wood lintel, alongside a bread oven to the right, featuring a 19th-century cast-iron door displaying the maker’s emblem “Vale and Co.” The 20th-century lean-to attached to the right gable end is not of architectural significance.
