Description
The Elephant and Castle Inn is a public house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century and the 1960s. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a 20th-century stone slate roof with raised eaves, which was previously thatched. The building has rubble stone chimneys located between the left bays and to the right, both of which were rebuilt in the 20th century.
The inn has a three-cell lobby-entry plan and later rear extensions, standing at one and a half storeys with three bays. The outer bays on the ground floor have canted bay windows, both of which were renewed in the 20th century. The central bay features a 19th-century tripartite sash window with a wooden lintel. The upper storey contains three gabled casements. The lobby entry, located between the left bays, has a 20th-century door with a flat stone hood supported by shaped stone brackets. There is another 20th-century door between the right bays, also with a wooden lintel.
Inside, the centre bay has a deeply chamfered ceiling beam with stops and a stop-chamfered wooden fireplace lintel. The right bay includes a narrower stop-chamfered spine beam, a blocked fireplace, and an axial stone winder staircase.
