Description

The former Bampton Primary School, built in 1863 by William Wilkinson of Oxford, is now a youth club. This building is designed in the High Victorian Gothic style and constructed from rock-faced limestone with Bath stone dressings. It features steeply-pitched slate roofs with stone coped gables and stone axial and lateral stacks that have weathered set-offs.

The school is a single-storey structure with an asymmetrical five-bay east front. On the left side, there is a large gabled cross-wing that includes an integral gabled porch. The front also has two smaller gables set back at the center and a large gabled porch on the right. The porches have depressed two-centred arch doorways with plank doors that feature ornate strap-hinges and buttresses with weathered set-offs. The right-hand porch has an inscribed plaque in the gable indicating that the freehold was granted by the Earl of Shrewsbury to the parish. The gables are adorned with large two, three, and four-light mullion windows with cusped heads. A later 19th-century small flat-roofed addition is located at the center.

The rear elevation is gabled with three bays, featuring a large gable on the right and a smaller gable to its left. There is a gabled wing projecting on the left with a lateral stack positioned to the left of center, also with weathered set-offs. The two right gables have large four-light mullion-transom windows. Similar windows are found in the gables on the north side, while the south side includes a large mullion-transom window that breaks the eaves and a later 19th-century flat-roof addition.

Inside, the classrooms boast arch-braced roofs.
