Description

Leighton Cottage is a house that is said to have been built as a residence for a schoolmaster and may have also served as a workshop at one time. It dates from the late 17th century to the 18th century and features flanking extensions that have been altered. The building is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with stone slate roofs and a brick chimney. It has two storeys and an attic, with two original bays.

On the south side, there are 19th-century two-light barred wooden casements in partly blocked openings, which have long wooden lintels. The ground floor on the left has been altered to include a 20th-century three-light barred metal casement, and there are also 20th-century skylights. At the rear of the left bay, there is a gabled external chimney with a rebuilt shaft. The left end has a narrow lower extension with a board door, an old two-light wooden casement above, and 20th-century solar panels on the very steep roof. To the right is another full-height bay from the 19th century, which has a blind wall facing south. The right gable end, which faces the road, features 19th-century sash windows and various casements, including one in a blocked doorway.

Inside, there is a fireplace in the left bay with dressed stone jambs and a stone lintel. The original part of the house has a heavy double butt purlin roof, with the central truss supported by shaped braces to a high collar. There are traces of a third window in the centre of the first floor, and a ceiling beam with ornamental stops can be found in the 19th-century bay. The long first-floor windows and the attic storey may suggest that the building was used as a workshop. Leighton Cottage is included for its group value.
