Description
Ivy House, formerly known as J Butler Furnishers, is a shop located in Chipping Norton's Market Place. It dates from the early 18th century and has undergone alterations. The building features coursed rubble stone on the side walls, with render on other areas, topped by a hipped stone tiled roof and side and ridge stone stacks. It stands three storeys tall and has a two-window range facing the Market Place. Notable architectural features include a moulded eaves cornice and two floors of recessed large pane sash windows. The ground floor has a remodelled shop front. Inside, the first-floor room that overlooks the Market Place has a stuccoed ceiling divided into two compartments. Originally, this space consisted of two rooms, each with slightly different decorative schemes. The western section features a central rose surrounded by radiating leaves and intricate foliage, while the eastern section has a similar central rose motif flanked by additional roses with swirling catherine wheel tendrils.
