Description

Two cottages, numbers 17 and 18, stand on the west side of High Street, Shipton-under-Wychwood. They appear to date from the late 17th or early 18th century. The cottages are constructed of coursed rubble, with a freestone front to number 18. They are roofed with Cotswold stone, topped by three corniced ashlar chimneys, the central one original. Both cottages have two storeys and an attic, with three gabled dormers.

Number 17 features a single range of chamfered mullion windows set in rebated surrounds, with drips. A plain window is positioned above the doorway, and the doorway itself has a ledged door under a timber lintel. Number 18 has five windows, mostly 19th-century narrow cross-mullioned casements. The central doorway is distinguished by a gabled wooden hood supported by brackets, sheltering a wide, nail-studded two-panel door.

Inside number 18 is a staircase dating from around 1680-90. It features turned, medium-heavy balusters on a straight string, alongside square newels.
