Description
The memorial urn, dating from the late 18th century, is located approximately 150 metres southeast of Harcourt House in Stanton Harcourt. It was created for George Simon Harcourt and is made of limestone. The urn is shaped like a gadrooned vase and features leaf carvings around the neck. It stands on a tall pedestal that has a moulded plinth and entablature. This memorial commemorates the poet William Whitehead, who died in 1785, and includes a verse by "Mr. Mason," the poet-gardener, whose own memorial is situated to the northeast. Originally, the urn was placed under the "Whitehead Oak" at Nuneham Courtenay but was relocated to its current position after the Harcourts returned to Harcourt House in 1948.
