Description
Hill Farmhouse, along with its attached stables, granary, and barn, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, which is roughly dressed at the front of the house, and features some stone dressings. It has plain tile roofs and is positioned at right angles to the road, with the stable and granary range adjoining the rear and an attached barn at right angles.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic and includes a two-storey rear wing. It has integral stone end stacks, although the left-hand stack has been partly rebuilt in 20th-century brick. The house features three gabled semi-dormers with 2-light wooden casements and is arranged in three bays, with 3-, 2-, and 2-light wooden casements that have stone cills and flush stone lintels. The central door has six flush panels, with the top two being glazed, and is topped by a stone lintel and a stone porch supported by wrought-iron brackets. The rear wing includes an integral rendered end stack.
The stable and granary range is one storey high, with the left side being lower than the right. It has a three-window front with 2- and 3-light windows, all featuring wooden lintels. There is an off-centre loft doorway to the left and two ground floor boarded doors, with the stable-type door on the right, both having wooden lintels. A boarded granary doorway is located to the right and is accessed by a flight of eight external stone steps. There is also a through passageway to the right with a wooden lintel. The interiors of the farmhouse and stable/granary range have not been inspected.
The barn consists of five bays and features opposed cart entrances with wooden lintels, although these are partly blocked at the rear. It has small square vent holes and the interior includes collar and tie beam roof trusses with raking struts and pairs of purlins.
