Description

Hunters Close Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, that dates from the mid 17th century and is a remodelling of an older, probably medieval, house. To the left is an earlier cross wing from the late 16th or early 17th century. The building features coursed limestone rubble on the left and squared and coursed stone on the main block. It has a gabled roof, with the cross wing hipped to the rear, covered in interlocking concrete tiles, and a stone end stack. The layout consists of a two-unit plan with the cross wing to the left, and the building has two storeys.

The main block has a two-window range with a timber lintel over a 20th-century window set in a central blocked doorway, and chamfered timber lintels over 20th-century casements. Similar casements are found on the gable end of the cross wing, which has a 20th-century entry to the rear. A central stair-turret at the back features two doveholes.

Inside, the main block has winder stairs that rise to the attic, along with chamfered beams. The main room to the left, which was formerly the hall, has 17th-century quartered and heavily chamfered beams from an inserted floor, and an open fireplace with a plain stone surround to the left. The left wing contains a stop-chamfered beam and joists in the front room, a chamfered doorframe, and a transverse timber-framed partition.
