CLANFIELD BLACK BOURTON ROAD SP2802-2902 (West side) 7/20 Cowhouse approx.35m SE of Chestlion Farmhouse

GV II

Cowhouse. Late C18 with minor later alterations. Regularly coursed limestone rubble; half-hipped stone slate roof. 2 levels. Ground floor has window and 2 stable doors to left of roughly central external lateral steps and doorway with flanking windows to right, all openings with wood lintels. First floor has gabled plank door breaking eaves, reached by steps and 2 eaves hatches to left. Interior: chamfered cross beams and exposed joists support continuous loft, removed to far left. Cobblestone floor. Single butt-purlin roof in 8 bays has principal rafters resting on spurs projecting from wall tops. These spurs are tenoned into inner curved principals rising from cross beams supporting loft floor. Straight collars link the curved principals to the principal rafters. Stone wall between fifth and sixth bays from left. A space left between the suspended loft and the back wall allows hay to be pushed down into the stalls below. [2312]
