Cowhouse Approximately 35 Metres South East of Chestlion Farmhouse

This cowhouse, located approximately 35 meters southeast of Chestlion Farmhouse, dates from the late 18th century and has undergone minor later alterations. It is constructed from regularly coursed limestone rubble and features a half-hipped stone slate roof. The building has two levels.

On the ground floor, there is a window and two stable doors to the left of roughly central external steps, with a doorway and flanking windows to the right. All openings have wooden lintels. The first floor includes a gabled plank door that breaks the eaves, accessed by steps, along with two eaves hatches to the left.

Inside, the cowhouse has chamfered cross beams and exposed joists that support a continuous loft, which has been removed on the far left side. The floor is made of cobblestones. The single butt-purlin roof consists of eight bays, with principal rafters resting on spurs that project from the tops of the walls. These spurs are tenoned into inner curved principals that rise from the cross beams supporting the loft floor. Straight collars connect the curved principals to the principal rafters. There is a stone wall between the fifth and sixth bays from the left, and a space left between the suspended loft and the back wall allows hay to be pushed down into the stalls below.
