Description
The dovecote, located approximately 130 metres southeast of Chastleton House, was built in 1762 for Thomas Fothergill. It is constructed from regularly coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring piers and alternating angle quoins that extend up to the gables. The roof is made of stone slate with coped verges and carved apexes. The dovecote has a square plan with four gables, each supported by segmental arches that include voussoirs, projecting keystones, and plain impost bands. The gables are rounded at the apex, with the northeast and southwest sides being blind, and lead water spouts are positioned at the corners. At the center, there is an open octagonal cupola topped with a lead cap and ball finial. The keystone of the northwest arch bears the inscription "THOMAS/FOTHERGILL/Esq./JUNE EY 2/1762". Inside, the loft is supported by a plain beam and joists, featuring a trap door, pigeon nesting holes, and ledges. The double butt-purlin roof is divided into two bays and includes a central truss with V-struts connecting the tie beam to the principal rafters.
