Description

This is a Chartist bungalow, dating to circa 1847. It is constructed of render on stone rubble, with render quoins marking the corners, and has a slate hipped roof with rendered end stacks and a central stack to the rear. The building consists of a single-storey, 3-bay range, with the central bay projecting forward. A wood verandah runs across the front. The central bay contains a sash door, while single-light casements are located to the left and right of the centre. Two-light casements are also present to the left and right. A cross-gable is a feature of the projecting central bay. The interior has not been inspected. This building is part of Charterville, the third of five estates established by the National Land Company in 1845, founded by Feargus O'Connor to assist factory workers to live on smallholdings and gain the right to vote. The Land Company faced financial difficulties and was dissolved in July 1851. This building demonstrates group value as an example of working-class housing provided under the Chartist Land Company scheme.
