Description

Brothertons Restaurant is a house dating from 1760, with early 19th century alterations, now functioning as a restaurant. It is built of limestone ashlar and features a gabled stone slate roof that is hipped to the left. The building has ridge stacks made of stone finished in brick, as well as brick end stacks. It is designed in an L-plan, with No.2 Market Place forming the rear left wing. The structure has two storeys and a five-window range.

To the right, there is a two-window range that includes timber lintels over a 19th century six-pane window situated above a tall 16-pane window, which features late 17th century carving of a man on horseback set in the tympanum. There is a flat stone arch above a 20th century door, accompanied by a similar overlight to the right. The left side has a three-window range with raised storey bands. It features a stone lintel over a 20th century door with a decorative overlight, flanked by 19th century shop windows that have bracketed cornices. The first-floor windows include stone lintels over six-pane sashes, and there is a French window with a wrought-iron balcony to the right. Inside, the building has chamfered beams. It was formerly owned by the Brothertons, who were ironmongers since the early 18th century.
