Description

High House and Bridge House are two houses located on the south side of Bampton Road in Black Bourton. High House is dated 1679, as indicated by a tablet in the gable, and features an early 19th-century extension at the rear. The building is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with a stone slate roof and a rebuilt rubble stone chimney on the left. It is a single cell structure with two storeys and an attic, presenting a narrow gable to the front. The windows are chamfered stone mullions with Tudor hoodmoulds, consisting of a 4-light window on the ground floor, a 3-light window on the first floor, and a 2-light window in the attic. There is also a similar 2-light window on the right side of the first floor, above a 19th-century half-glazed door featuring a rectangular fanlight and wooden lintel. A stone-slated porch with a roughcast gable is supported by wooden posts. The rear extension includes wooden casements and a hipped bay window on the left side. Inside, there is a winder stair aligned with the stack, blocked stair windows, and a slightly altered fireplace on the ground floor.

Bridge House, built around 1823 for John Cox, is also made of coursed rubble limestone but features dressed quoins and window surrounds. It has a stone slate roof and flanking rendered chimneys. This house has two storeys and three bays, with 4-pane sash windows. The central entrance consists of a 6-panelled door with a marginally glazed rectangular fanlight and a wooden architrave frame. A fine ashlar porch with tall Tuscan-Doric columns, an architrave, and a pediment enhances the entrance, along with a lower rear wing.
