Description

A pair of semi-detached estate workers' cottages dating to approximately 1860, designed by E.G. Bruton for Christ Church College, Oxford. The cottages are constructed of squared and coursed limestone, rock-faced, with slate roofs. A central stone chimney is present. The plan is almost symmetrical, with two gabled bays centrally, a gabled rear wing, and hipped porch projections set back to either side. The windows are in a rustic Gothick style, featuring pointed arches over narrow lights. The right-hand bay has a three-light ground floor window, with the central light flanked by shafts with cushion capitals. Above this is a two-light window with a chamfered stone mullion, and a gable vent slit. The left-hand bay has had its ground floor window altered in the 20th century to a rectangular bay window with a lean-to slate roof. The first floor retains a pair of original single-light windows, and the gable has a round vent hole. The porch projections, each two storeys high, have slit windows and arched doorways with board doors to the front. The cottages form part of a larger grouping including a row of two further pairs of cottages and a lodgings house.
